AUSTRALIAN CABLES.
(Per Press Association.) Melbourne, Sept 17. The railway passenger traffic is 450,000 less last .year than in the year 1891, while the total revenue is a little oyer £200,000 more than ten years ago when there was 1470 mile 9 less to operate. The Commissioners point out that the deficit is equal to about 15 per cent of the present revenue, and a very slight increase in traffic would supply this without the necessity of any increase in expenditure. In the Assembly the Speaker made a lengthy statement in reference to the recent scene, and explained that he had not heard the call for a division. This was borne out by the clerks and Hansard. Much, he said, might be printed about the matter that should not have been. He had no political opinion and no bias. It was nothing to him which way the House voted. The Premier moved that the explanation was satis factory to the House. Sir J. Patterson objected, but the Opposition accepted the explanation. Sydney, September 17. Dean has been ordered to pay 12a 6d per week and six months' maintenance for his wife. He had previously made a vol untary offer to pay 10s, and take care of the child. The Coal Cliffe miners have struck against the reduction in the hewing rate from 2s 2d to 2s. Over 50 are affected. In the Legislative Assembly the Land and Income Tax Bill has been read a third time by 54 to 24, and passed.
