THE PRESS ON THE HANK OF NEW ZEALAND. (Per Press Association.) Melbourxk, September 9 The Age, in commenting on the Bank of Now Zealand figures, says the position may be claimed to be safe and sound and will tcud, under careful management, to restore the Bank's earlier prestige. Sydney, Sept. 9. The Sydney Daily Telegraph says the New Zealand Government must recognise that if its banking policy is to be carried to its logical conclusion, in the end it will become impossible for other institutions to compete against the State bank, There is, too, evidently irritation against foreign institutions, and a desire to oppress them, and it would be well that this temper should subside completely as soon as possible. Foreign banks were wise in the caution they exercised all through, and had the Bank of New Zealand been similarly cautious the losses would have been avoided. Grainger, who claimed £10,000 for injuries in the Redfern railway accident, has been awarded iMOOO. Sir George Dibbs is nominated forjthe ' posiiton of one of the managing trustees of the New South Wales Savings Bank. [ The position requires to be confirmed by ; the Governor-in-Council, and practically . entails his retirement from politics. Adelaide, Sep. 9. A strong syndicate of members of both Houses of the Legislature has been formed to develop the gold mines at Augipcna, on the Great Northern railway. This Day. An exploring party of five men, with three camels and a horse, have reached Warrina overland from the Western Australian goldfields. The journey occ upied 50 days. The party had no difficulty iv finding "water and feed, and consider it practicable to make a good stock route from Adelaide to Western Australia. Sydney, This Day. As a result of his visit to the Railway Congress, Mr Eddy is highly impressed with the use of electricity for tramway purposes, and states he intends to recommond the Government to convert the whole of the present system in Sydney into an electrical system and to construct new lines. The Redfern Railway accident cases are now all settled. The total amount claimed by the sufferers was £167,500, and the awards paid in settlement £34,300. ______
