GREAT DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY. (Per Press Association.) Melbourne, Sept 5. Heavy rain has fallen in Gippsland. There are several washouts on the Thorpdale railway. The crops on the lowlands are damaged. Sydney, September 5. The bush fires are unabated, devasting large areas in all parts, assisted by the prevailing high wind. South Coast dairying districts were swept ; Berry and other townships encircled were only saved by the residents organising and fighting the flames day and night. Several outlying houses end schools were destroyed. For miles tha mountain ranges are blazing, presenting a magnificent spectacle. Fifty square miles have been devasted by bush fires in the Kimpsey district.
