HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The House met at 7.30. The Premier gave notice that he would I move that for the remainder of the session the House meet on Mondays at 7 30 p.m., and that Government business take precedence on Wednesdays. I Captain Russell pressed for some idea as to the order of business, and Mr Seddon replied that prominence would be given to the departmental estimates Alcoholic Liquor Bill and the Tariff. The Colonial Treasurer, iv answer to Sir Robert Stont, said every precaution would be taken so far as Government were concerned to prevent cholera spreading from Honolulu to this country. Mr Caruell moved ihc .second reading of the Harbor Act 1878 Amendment Bill, to give direct representation to the Napier Chamber of Commerce on the Napier Harbor Board. The motion was agreed to. Several attempts wore made to kill the Inebriates Institution Bill, but without success. On clause i), Mr Collins moved that a penalty not exceeding £'25 or six months' imprisonment be imposed on auy person making false declaration, which was carried by 31 to 16. No material amendment was made on the Inebriates Instution Bill, and progress was reported shortly after midnight. The divorce Bill (Mr McNab's) was considered in committee. Mr Hall- Jones moved to strike out dosertion as a ground of divorce. Lost by 31 to 10. A motion to extend the period of desertion which forms the ground of divorce above four years was lost by 23 to 18. A motion providing that divorce may be granted on tho ground if either party has been convicted of attempting to take the other's |life was carried bj' 27 to 12. Progress was reported. The House rose at 1.40.
