"When the House resumed at 7.30 the Hon Scddon brought up an interim report of the Banking Committee as follows : — " Finding it impossible to bring up a full report this evening, the Committee thinks it right to inform the Council and the House that they ha\e come to a conclusion which if adopted ! by Parliament will in their opinion place the Bank of New Zealand in a secure position." Hon. Seddon then asked that the Committee be granted one day's extentension in which to bring down their report, stating that the Committee felt sure they would be able to bring down the report at 2.30 to-morrow afternoon. When members were placed in possession of the Committee's report he said thej' would insist on Government proceeding with the Bill to give effect to it. Mr Mifcchelson asked whether the evidence taken by the Committee would be brought down with the report, and whether the Premier intended to take the debate as soon as the report was brought down. The Hon. Mr Seddon said that the hou. member must not forget the committee was a secret committee, and he was glad to say that so far it had not belied its name. He was not in a position at present to give a direct reply to the first question, but he could say that there was no doubt that the accompanying report would be more than sufficient evidence to warrant the conclusion ar- ] rived at. He would say definitely tomorrow when the debate would be taken. Several members having spoken, the Hen. Mr Seddon replied, regretting that the party element had been introduced into the question, which was a national one. Government had no intention to proceed with the report as soon as it was laid on the table, being desirous of giving members time for its consideration. The motion for extension of time was agreed to on thejvoices. THE LATEST. This Day.
