FEILDING I.v.PALMERSTON I.
The above senior match, which was ordered by the Manawatu Rugby Union to be played to decide the senior championship, was played on the Showgrouud, Palmerston North, on Saturday last. The Feilding team was materially weakcued by the absence of Messrs Jack, Le Cren, G. Shannon, Johnston, and Richards, but the vacancies were tilled by Messrs Desmond, Lloyd, Moore, and Manning. " Scandritt " was delayed in getting to the ground, and through the courtesy of the Palmerstou captain Guy was allowed to play till his arrival. Palmerston won the toss, and, with a strong wind in their favor, defended the Northern goal. Within a few minutes after commencing pla}', Palmerston forwards worked up a very fast rush and Elliott crossed the line, but lost the ball, and Pyke securing it scored a try. The kick at goal was taken by Keeling, but no increase in the score resulted. Very shortly after the Feilding forwards, headed by Sanson, Giesen, and Smith, started to force the game. Smith eventually secured the ball, and with the best run of the day he ran from the centre of the field around and through the opposing team, and scored a most deserved try. Sanson took the kick, but the attempt was a failure, owing chiefly to the high wind then blowing. From this the game was*very fast, and resulted in Keeling, from a pass from the alert Podevin, scoring another try. This attempt at goal was also unsuccessful. After a good deal of give and take play, in which W. Shannon Barlow, and Robinson were all seen to great advantage, the first spell ended — with Palmerstou 6 points, Feilding- 3. Speculation was now very rife as to whether tho Visitors could, with the wind in their favor and their disconnected team, secure the necessary points to win. Most of the game was spent on the line in the Palmerstou twenty-fives, and here " Scandritt," Giosen, Sauson, and Mathcsou were working hard, Sanson eventually getting a mark and, from a decidedly difficult angle and amidst rounds of applause, kicked a beautiful (ioal— Feilding 7 points, Palmerston 6. J Time and again the Palmerston backs secured the ball, and at times their creditable passing rushes looked dangerous, but the danger was invariably averted by the quick interception of Robinson, Shannon, " Scandritt," and J Smith. Moore here put in some useful work with his collaring. The play was very even from this to the end of the game, and both sides were straining every nerve to score, but without result, i For Palmerston Podovin, Hewitt, Cox, j and Weight played well amongst the backs, and Pyke, Elliott, and Matheson were the pick of the forwards ; for Feilding Shannon, Barlow, Robinson, and Giesen plaj r ed with a great deal of dash, aud yet; were very safe, for the back division, and of the forwards Sansou, Giesen, " Scandritt," Smith, and Matheson were the pick, though one and all in the team played with a great j deal of courage aud determination under very adverse circumstances. Mr Weekes acted as referee, and, but in some decisions did not please the visitors. Messrs Matheson and Stoney were the lineempires. The Feilding II will not play Colytou on Wednesday. The match Taranaki v. Wellington resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. Otago defeated Auckland, at Dunedin, by 11 to 8. Canterbury defeated Wairarapa, afc Christchurch by 12 points to nil.
