It is estimated that for the year ended April 30th last there was a decrease of f 78,349 in the number of sheep in the " Wel lington -West Coast district, as com- i pared with the previous year. At the Police Court yesterday afternoon, before Messrs W. A. Sandilands and H, L. Sherwill, J.P.s, an elderly 1 man named Richard Henry Pope, of Halcombe, was committed to the Wellington Lunatic Asylum ou the certificates of Drs Johnston and Sorley. A doctor has discovered the curious fact that the skull of a man who has died from delirium tremens contains an aleo- ] holic gas. A small opening in the skull soon after death premits this gas to es- l cape, and it can be ignited arid burns with j a bluish flame, to the surprise and terror of all beholders. * Whatever my hearers might do I my- ] self always learned something by lectur- ] ing. It is stated that the Longburn Freezing Works will not long remain idle as several companies in England bave been making inquiries about tbe property with a view to purchasing. There "is also a proposal to form a new company to carry on the works. It is stated that tho Hon E. Blake, member of the English House of Com mous, and formerly leader of the Liberal Party in tbe Canadian Parliament, has accepted the position of umpire in the dispute between the Government of New Zealand and the Midland Railway Company. The distress amongst New Zealauders iv Sydney, we have beeu informed, is simply appalling. It is stated tbat on ono occasion several New Zealauders, including an ex-Wellingtoniau, were seen to be eating from a pig tub at tbe back of a hotel. This tea has only recently been brought prominently before tbe public, but its superior quality is rapidly creating a very considerable demand. In another column will be found a replace advertisement from Messrs Kirkcaldie and Staius, the well kuown drapers, in whicli attention is drawn to a recent shipment of novelties in dress fabrics of English ancl French manufacture. Paterns of dress goods and washing fabrics for spriug wear may be obtained on application. The Wanganui Meat Freezing Company bave made a net profit of £3211 4s Id for tbe year ending July 30th last, out of whicli it is proposed to pay a dividend of 5 per cent, write off £1500 for depreciation and carry forward the balance of £502 18s 4d. The works bave been fully employed since the season commenced on November the 19th last year. A Scotch law court has decided that a prosecution against certain persons for setting game cocks armed with steel spurs to fight was not an offence against the Act for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, because a bird is not an animal within the meaning of the Act. The Christian World says, "If a bird is not an animal, it is pretty certain that the law— Scotch law — is an ass." The death is announced at Auckland of Mr Reader Wood, at the age of 74. He arrived in Auckland in 1844, and commanded the Artillery Volunteers at the disastrous engagement of Ohaeawai Pah in the year 1845. He was a member of the Provincial Council, and in the General Assembly in IS6O for Parnell, Colonial Treasurer in the Fox Ministry, and in the Domett and Whitaker Fox Ministries, and went Home and floated a three million loan at the outbreak of tho Waikato war. Of late years he lived in retirement.
