Sala is seriously ill, and his condition is causing alarm to bis friends. Mr Chamberlain in reply to a deputation, refused to re-open the question of the cession of Swaziland. The Government must, he said, preserve the continuity of policy, and they could not interfere with the Boer Commandeering, but tbey would protect the Swazis in other respects under the terms of the Convention. The rival services by the east aud west coasts from Aberdeen to London have been indulging in some racing again. One of the latter's train ran 540 miles in 550 miuutes, wbich is claimed to be the world's record. The Co-operation Conference has formed a committee to promote permanent business relations with co-operative workers all over the world. The refusal of tbe Chinese Government to allow the Consuls to take any part in the Eucheng enquiry has created a serious difficulty. Zanzibar, August 20. A British East African expedition bas been despatched against Rusel, chief of the Brank tribe, and it has been decided to burn Gazi, his stronghold, as he refused to comply with the demands of the British. Rome, August 21. Tho Italian press is irritated at France giving notice to terminate the treaty with Italy with regard to Tunis.
