Shocking Brutality.

DISGRACEFUL TREATMENT OF A GIRL. (Per Press Association.) Napier, Aug. 21. At the Waipawa S.M. Court to-day William. Merrick, settler, of Waikopiro, was sent to gaol for two months for brutally beating his daughter, aged 13, under circumstances already telegraphed. While he thrashed the naked girl, tied to a bed post, until the blood spurted over the walls, the mother stuffed a towel into her mouth to prevent her screams being heard by the neighbours. The punishment was inflicted because the girl had run away from home in consequence of previous illtreatment and starvation. The girl was banded over to the Charitable Aid Board.
