« (Per Press Association.) Auckland, August 20. Miss Squire, of Christebiireb, haa been anpointed lady superintendant of the district hospital, out of 42 applicants. There are 154 applications for the post of messenger. Reefton, August 19. An offer for purchase has been made by the representative of a London syndicate to the directors of the Big River Goldmining Company. The directors recommend the sale of the property. Wellington, August 20. During the past twelve months the accumulated amount owing by past and present patients of the hospital is i£9oo. The trustees have decided to take steps to get in some of the overdue money. The Telegraph Department has decided to duplex the Wakapuaka- Wanganui cable, aud the staff at either end has been enlarged. Dr Macgregor has reported against the Mount Cook prison site ior an aslyum. The lonic left Rio for London on the afternoon of tho 17th, with htr meat in good condition. Captain Fairchild, of the Government steamer Hinemoa, has left for Nelson to take up the duties of Harbor pilot there and will remain till the new harbour master, Mr Cox, has been sufficiently installed to take fu'l responsibility of the position.
