The Live Stock Trade.
v ■ (Per Press Association). Adelaide, August 19. A letter received from the agent in charge of the cattle on qoard theEchuca shows that the exceptional mortality was caused by a terrific gale experienced shortly after the vessel left port. The Register, commenting on this, says it is questionable whether provision can be made against such weather, j except that cattle should be well broken before being shipped in order to render them more manageable under difficulties. The recent shipments of sheep, says the -.paper, have proved most conclusively that it will pay to export them from Adelaide. The charge of 2s 6d per head for pens is, however, unreasonable. It ought to be an easy matter to construct substantial fittings so that at the end of each voyage they could be stowed aboard till again required. It is waste of money and labor to compel consignors to construct new pens for each shipment, and then sell the material at half price. Unless the charge is reduced, the trade is , likely to be strangled at the outset. i
