KIWITEA BRIDGE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sin, —As it is quite evident the Borough Council will be unable to erect the bridge on the estimate of Mr Holmes, as printed, without the assistance of the Government, and, if one can judge from tho statements made and increased taxation to meet current expenses there is very little chance of that, except they go in for another big loan. In the meantime our summer will soon pass away and make it more difficult to get such work done. It is also quite evident that Messrs Bray and Hill's estimate is too small to carry out this proposal in the present state of the river. As others have ventured to give an opinion although, not experts, I will do the same as it may lead others who know more to discuss the matter, and that is to start the bridge some four or five chains below tho point on the west side and that approach would be practically safe as it would tako many years for the cliff above it to get washed away, even'a*; the rate i s, has been going lately. From thence direct across to Mr Ryan's property four chains from which about eight chains of facine training bank would take it up to the present Kimboltoa road. If facine work would b& effective to protect the bridge in one position it should in another, and it would have this advantage that the heavy traffic on the road would help to bind it, and there would be no land to buy aa it would be all on their own property. Taking Mr Holmes' estimate: Bridge 264 ft at £7, £1844 ; S chains facine at £52, £416 ; 12 chains willow plant at 50s, £15 ,■ forming, metalling, and fencing round and filling behind faciue work about £300 ; total, £2575. Jf Mefgrs Bray and Hill can show the bridge can s'iil be put up with safety on ih^ old site there is no harm done and I can only apobgise for taking up your space. I am, &c, Observer. Feilding, August 17, 1595.
