_ * — — Tho annual general meeting of the Feilding Cricket Club will be held in tho Feilding Hotel to-morrow evening at 7.80 p.m. Mr Bagnall lias won the champion badge of' tho Palmerston Chess Club, beating Dr Satchell in tho fiual competition. The funeral of tho late William Campbell will leave his father's residence, Warwick street, to-morrow afternoon at 2 p.m. for the Feilding cemetery. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : Indications for strong north east to north aud west winds, with rain after 12 hours from now. Glass fall soon. A number of tho members of the Feilding Masouic Lodge drove over to Bulls this afternoon to attend the funeral of their late brother P.M. Charles L. McLean. At Invercargill a baukrupt named A. McDonald, storekeeper of Oakura, was placed on probation for 3 mouths and ordered to pay costs of the prosecution for not keeping proper books. The balance-sheet of the Wanganui Freezing Company shows a surplus of £3211, and the directors propose lo write off £1500, pay a dividend of 5 per cent., and carry forward the balance. Next Suuday and until the enlargement and beautifying of the Primitive Methodist Church have been completed, the services will be held in the Temperance Hall. We learn from a private source that Mr Alex. Ferguson, ftrmerly of Palmerston N. and the Kiwitea, has decided to settle down iv Wanganui. We wish him aud his family every success, and happiness in their new home. The secretary of the Wanganui Meat Freezing Company, Mr B. E. Hihbard, advertises in connection with the manure season 1895-96, the prices of the compauys manures on the trucks at the Wanganui railway station. The quality of these manures is undoubted and the analysis is guaranteed. It is probable that the " old identities " of the Manchester Block will be invited to join in a social gathering some time about the end of this, or the beginning of next year. The idea is a good one, and its success would be assured. The comparisons to be made between " then and now " should prove as interesting as surprising. The new offices of the Manawatu County at Sandon are both commodious and comfortable. The total cost was only £221, and the building is a credit to the Council. Tho architect was Mr West, of Palmerston North, and Mr J. Dillon was the contractor who has completed the work to the entire satisfaction of his employers. The first meeting was held in the new premises on Wednesday last. Our pleasure loving readers are reminded of the Volunteer Ball which will take place this evening. The affair promises to be a brilliant success, for no effort has been spared by the Ball Committee to accomplish that end. We have been requested to state that ladies and gentlemen who como in fancy dresses will greatly oblige by writing the names of the characters they represent on the backs of their tickets of admission. Dancing will commence at 8.30 sharp. The Inspector of the Post and Telegraph Department is considering the advisability of erecting a separate building for a post office at Ashurst. A day or two ago ho paid an official visit to Ashurst and viewed several sites which were offered. It is stated that the residents of Ashurst are anxious to see a better building erected, and there is every probability of one being provided at an early date. A Geraldine correspondent of Truth writes:— A peculiar story comes from the back country in connection with the recent heavy fall of snow. Several men were rescuing sheep from four feet of snow on to tracks cut for that purpose at Mount Peel, when they witnessed a most unusual sight. A bare had been left on the track by a hawk, and this six or seven sheep literally fell upon and devoured, leaving scarcely a trace of the animal behind. .->--' It is considered probable tb,at "if" Sir Patrick Buckley is raisfid-tb^flTe Supreme Court Bench, Mr GnTimess, the Chairman of Committees, is most likely to succeed kirn as Attorney-General. That would of course leave another vacancy to be filled up in the Chairmanship of Committees, which would no doubt be conferred either on Major Stewart or Mr Joyce, both of whom are pronounced Government supporters. — Parliamentary correspondent H.B. Herald. By the death of Mrs Wise, of Feild-iug-Ashurst road, which occurred a few days ago, an old resident in the district has been removed. She was well known and highly respected for her sterling Christian character. She had many friends and during her last illness much sympathy was shown towards ber. She was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church, therefore on Sunday evening next the Rev J. Cocker will conduct a memorial service in the Temperanoe Hall to which all friends of the late Mrs Wise are specially invited. Writes the Stratford correspondent of the Hawera Star :— The scarcity of butter of which I wrote yon a fortnight ago has become a famine in Stratford ; there is none to be got. Onr principal storekeeper got 701bs down from New Plymouth a few days ago, and it was all gone in two hours and no more to he had, so ho is getting a supply up from Wellington, of nil the places in the world. Of course, it won't last long— the cows will^bo coming in directly, and butter will' bo at a heavy discount locally. Bnt where could .you find a be" tor proof of my recent a-si-riion that win'cr dairying (around here) has not been found to piy ? j Hud ji jjeen othmwiso, thfre would have been no im.h I_(s qf §.o«er now* you may I depend.
