• a (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, Aug. 15. The Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association endorced the resolution of the meeting of runholders held at Ashburton to consider the rabbit pest. A letter has been forwarded to the Minister of Agriculture, urging that prompt measures should be taken for the erection of protective fencing. On the night of the 7th inst. the premises of F. Trent, merchant were hroken into, aud 2801 b tobacco stolen. Last night the detectives recovered nearly all the tobacco in an empty house at St. Albans, and this morning arrested two men on a charge of having stolen it. Auckland, August 15. The Railway station at Papakura was broken into last night. The 6afe was blown open and about £40 taken. Tbe charge ol murder against Samuel Evison has been withdrawn and he was discharged by the Magistrate. The investigation in Nottingham in no way substantiated the man's confession. The chief constable believes it untrue. At a largely attended meeting of persons interested in tbe mining industry a committee was appointed lo draw up a constitution for the proposed Chamber of Mines. Woodville, August 15. The action Frewinr v. Woodville Jockey Club, a claim of £100 damages for an assault by the clerk of course in cutting plaintiff over the face when removing him from the course at the last race meeting, was heard to-day, before Mr Stanford, S.M. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £20, with £8 5s costs, the Magistrate considering that, though the plaintiff was a trespasser, unnecessary violence was used in removing him from the course. Gisborne, August 15. At the Supreme Court in the case Charles Johnson v the Union Company for £300 damages for injuries received while working on the Moa, plaintiff was nonsuited. .
