Education Conference.
{Per Press Association! Wellington, August 9. At the Education Conference to-day Mr Mills, of Marlborough, moved a resolution to ask the Minister to alter the Act so as to do away with the friction between boards and committees re appointing teachers. A long discussion ensued. The majority of members, whilst agreeing that the present procedure was unsatisfactory, yet they would decline to vote for the motion, because they considered it would place too much power in the hands of the committees and the motion was lost. Mr MacGregor, of Otago, moved a resolution that the boards should be elected by the electors of the colony, and the Minister be asked to amend the Act in that direction. The motion was lost on the casting vote of the chair- . man. _ r A motion by Dr Newman, of Welling- , ton, in favor of a national system of j decimal notation was agreed to. ' On the motion of Mr Udy, of Auck- J land, it was resolved to ask the Minister * to amend the Act to enable boards to , establish central schools for children after passing the fifth standard with a 1 view to gire children a more practical instruction than is afforded by the present schools. Replying to a deputation from the Educational Conference tonight, the 1 Hon. Mr Reeves said as to the building € grant they had at present to make I £45,000 do where about £60,000 was v necessary, and he would ask Parliament * to keep to the latter amount. r
