A Sensational Conspiracy Case.
(Per Press Association). Sydney, August 9. A sensational conspiracy case has been occupying the Court. Last year Judge Windeyer granted Thomas Richard Butler a decree nisi for divorce from his wife on the ground of adultery -with George Williams, whose real name has since been ascertained to be Charles Davis. Subsequent revelations led the Crown to prefer against Butler, Davis and a woman named Peake a charge of conspiring to falsely accuse Mrs Butlor. Evidence was submitted to prove that Davis and Peake had been paid by Butler to lead his wife astray in order that he might obtain a divorce. All three accused were found guilty the jury adding a rider that Mrs Butler had not committed the offence for which the divorce was granted. Butler and Davis were sentenced to seven years and Peake to five years. Rofe, who acted as solicitor for Butler in the divorce proceedings, has also been arrested on a charge of conspiracy.
