Chinese Massacre of Missionaries
MORE OUTRAGES COMMITTED. (Per Press Association). London, August 6. Further particulars of tbe Kucheng massacre show that the Kurds and soldiers, police and tax gatherers, all vied in committing horrible attrocities. Dr Stewart a month ago asked Misses Saunders and Gordon to leave for the coast, hut tbey refused, pleading that ho would allow them to stay. Tbey saicl they would put their trust in God anci remain at their duty. Dr Stewart's last letters speak of the noble work tbe Sanders were doing. A lady missionaiy who has returned states tbat tbe work was conducted quietly, and tbat the missionaries were particularly careful not to give offence. Sir H. Macartney, Councillor of tbe Chinese Legion m London, has given a promise tbat tbe Chinese Government will punish tbe murderersTbe British naval commander on tbe Chinese station, Vice-Admiral Sir E. Fremantle has received orders to enforce the demand for redress and satisfaction for the Kueheng massacre. Sydney, August 8. Miss Newcombe, one of tbe Kucheng victims, was niece of a Now Zealand schoolmaster of the same name. Dr On Lee, in an interview, said tbe Vegetarians were fearless and quiet, but desperate as a class. He did not think, tbe rising bad any political significance, but was all on acconnt of religion. Shakghai, August 7. The American consul euh Fooehow has obtained evidence tbat the mandarin's attack was intended days before it took place, the native christians being subjected to terrible persecutions. Foreigners were insulted everywhere. H.M.S. Linnet bas been ordered to Foocbow. August 8. Yesterday a mob attacked tbe British and American mission bouses in Path an near Canton. Tbe hospital was demolished. Some of the residents fled from the city. A Chinese gunboat has been sent there. Tbe Vegetarians number 12,000, and are well armed. Tbey state tbey intend to destroy the whole of tbe missions in Quang Tung province aud eject the missionaries. It is reported tbat an outbreak against tbe Christians has taken place in Cbing Chow, Hupiti, Taiping and Antiur. Tbe attack was organised by tbe officials. At a public meeting resolutions were carried denouncing tbe connivance of tbe officials, and complaints were made of the inadequate means of tbe Government to protect tbeir subjects in tbe East, and demanding that pressure be brought to bear on tbe Chinese Government to stop tbese outrages. Tbe American Consul in Foocbow reports tbat be bas obtained tbe names of tbe leaders of tbe massacre. Tbe schoolmaster referred io in tbe Sydney cablegram is evidently Mr C. P. Newcombe, for some time master of tbe Domain Grammar School in Auckland, and now we believe, at Waverley. Miss Stewart, wbo was one of tbe victims of tbe massacre, is a sister of Mrs John Johnston of Tenui.
