The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwiea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 1895. THE BUTTER TRADE IN ENGLAND.

We lately had the pleasure of perusing a letter from an English firm which had landed some of the butter manufactured by the Cheltenham Dairy Company, and can assure our readers that the remarks were of the most satisfactory character, the writer only regretting that he could not procure more of their produce. The gentleman in question ia in the retail trade and he gave the opinions of so me of his customers who were loud in their praises, some of them saying that the butter was quite equal to best English dairy butter. The writer stated that he could dispose of a very large quantity and we are glad learn that the Company are arranging to send regular shipments to him. This is very welcome news for the dairymen of the district, but as we said before it is necessary iv order to keep up regular shipments that a larger supply of milk should be forthcoming. One remark in the letter mentioned is worthy of notice and that is that none of our butter nor cheese is sold on its merits as " New Zealand." To quote his own words " neither New Zealand butter or cheese, although enclosed in packages distinctly branded as required by your Act of Parliament, are ever put before the consuming public with any distinguishing mark. They are, of course, exposed on the shop counters without any cover or brand, and disposed of merely as l choicest butter ' or ' finest cheese,' and the consumer pays top prices for them." This is a matter that should receive the atten tiou of our Government and we are glad to see that they have promised to appoint an agent at Home to attend to such matters as this.
