Proposed Treaty with Canada.
* SAWMILLERS UP IN ARMS. A deputation consisting of M.H.R.'s and M.L.C.'s waited on the Colonial Treasurer yesterday and urged that the proposed Canadian treaty would have an injurious effect on the Auckland timber and fish industries. It was also claimed that the timber mills in Nelson, Marlborough and Hawke's Bay districts would have to shut up. The fish curers were alarmed at the proposal to allow the importation of Canadian salmon free of duty as it would strangle the local industry. Mr Ward in reply said the object of the Government was to widen the external trade of the colony so as to enable exporters to have larger markets for their produce. He did not think Canadian timber would interfere with our colonial markets. He had no wish to injure the colonial timber industry, and if it was likely to suffer by the treaty the latter could be modified. The same remarks would apply to the fish industry.
