UNFORTUNATE CIVIL SERVANTS.
FEMALE FBANCHISE. (Per Press Association.) Hobart, This Daj'. The Assembly, by 22 to 5, approved of the extension of the franchise to women in connection with the election of members of the Legislative Council. Mkmjournk, August 1. The Treasurer announced that the expenditure for the current year would be Looo,ooo less than last year, chiefly the result of retrenchment which had now attained about as low a level as was possible. During last 12 months 1126 Civil servants were retrenched or dismissed, resulting in a saving of L 153,000 per annum in salaries alone. In the Legislative Assembly the Government proposal to raise the duty on colonial refined sugar from 5s to us 6d caused a warm discussion. This Day. In the Assembly on the tariff debate the Government proposal to reduce the duty on timber from 4s to Is per 100 ft. This was rejected and the rate fixed at 2s. It was decided to admit 12 by 6 timber and over free, instead of the proposed duty of Is per 100 ft. Sydney, This Day. It is reported Government will very shortiy make eight to ten appointments to the Legislative Council. The number including several proinmentFreetraders who were unsuccessful at the elections. The Eldorado fire is still mouldering steadily.
