The victims were a boat's crew of natives in the employ of a German trader of Nusa. New Ir&land. Early in April, whilst away with the trader's boat, the natives were captured by bush tribes and butchered, some of the bodies being taken to : the highlands for a cannibalistic feast. About the same time Captain Brune and a native crew of the schooner Svga had a narrow escape.
