SIR H. PARKES DEFEATED.
(Per Press Association.) Sydney, July 24. Mr Reid, Premier, defeated £ir H. Parkes by 608 to 468. A more disagreeable day for the elections could Dot have possibly have been selected. ' The weather was bitterly cold, and showers at frequent intervals. This evening the rain held off somewhat. An immense and excited throng filled King street, the point of absorbing interest being the contest for King division of Sydney, where Mr Reid (Premier) gained a victory over Sir H. Parkes, which hardly the moat sanguine expected to be so decisive. The following Ministerialists were re-elec-ted : Reid, Graham, Widdon, Harris, Hughes, Black, Davis, Law, Wilkes, Clark, Mahoney, Hogue, McGowan (Labor leader), McMillan, Hawthorne, O'Reilly, Jones, Storey, Farnell, Anderson, Cameron, Stevens, Varney, Parkes, McLeary, and N« i 1, who replaces another Ministerialist at Paddington. The Opposition gains Flinders division, Nelson, Protectionist, defeating Wise, the sitting member, and the Phillip division, where Meagh' 3r, Protectionist, beat Fowler. __ Ministerialists re-elected—Carruthers, Knox, Molesworth, Cotton, Rigg, Smailes, Barister, Thomson, Garrard, Moore, Smith, Holhs, Young (by a narrow majority). Howarth, Freetrader, beat Cullen, Ministerialist, at Willoughby. Other Ministerialists elected-Fegan, Griffiths, W. Morgan, Cook, Bauncker, Gould, Gillies, Newman, Lee, Hayne, Nicholson, Watsou, Afllick, and Ball. The position of the parties, including incomplete returns not likely to be affected is: — Ministerialists 67 Oppositionists 21 Independent ... ... 1 Otherwise arranged they give 52 Freetraders, 21 Protectionists, 15 Labours, and one Independent.
