Recommendations for ButterPacking
Fon tiie London Market. « Messrs Barraucl and Abraham's London agents, R. T. Turnbull and Co., recommend the following : — Only enamelled boxes should be used, and we recommend the use of double paper (stout grease-proof paper) in each box. The branding should be clean, and neat on the outside of the boxes. On no consideration should the style of branding be altered in the middle of the season. The surface of the butter ought to be perfectly smooth. If the brand is stamped upon the butter (which we recommend), the words • .New Zea^nd' should also be stamped on the butter, to avoid complications with the Customhouse officials here, under the provisions of the Merchandise Marks Act, which requires the country of origin to be shown on all imported manufactured goods. Regularity of weight is greatly to be recommended, as unevenly-packed butter causes continual disputes with buyers. The most desirable colour is a bright pale primrose. The colour of butter of any brand should not alter during the season, but should be of the same shade throughout, as it seriously interferes with the sale in certain districts if the colour of one shipment varies from that of another shipment. We recommend a uniform salting of 3% for all fine factory butter, and 4% to 5% for anything that is not up to the mark. Nothing disguises the defects in butter, which is not clean flavoured, so much as the free use of salt. Only the very best salt should bo used..
