Feilding Debating Society.
♦ The Committee of the Feilding Debating Society held a meeting yesterday and choose Messrs T. Watson, J. Cobbe, J. K. Black, the Revs. W. H. JueHrina and Innes Jones to represent the Society in the debate with the Palmerston Mutual Improvement Society. The subjects to be submitted to the Palmerston Society, from which one will be chosen for debate are: — "Is man happier in a civilised or an uncivilised state?" " Does moLsy exercise a gi eater influence than moral power ?" "Is prohibition preferable to a State monopoly of the liquor traffic ?" "Is intercolonial Froetrade desirable ?" " Does the poet exercisa greater influence than the statesman ?" It was decided to propose that the two openers in the debate each speak fifteen minutes, the other debaters ejgb,t minutes each and tb,en ten minutes be allowed to each of the two open,ers to reply. Subject to their consent, it was resolved to submit to the Palmerston Society the names of the following gentleman from whom they would select two as judges i-r-Mess/s, H. L. Sherwill, G. JCirton, !ls/ Good.- ' before, C. L. Mpl^ean., and D. P_ownes, The Palmerston Society will submit the names of some gentlemen, for the Feilding Society to select one judge. The Palmerston Society will make the chelae of a subject from those submitted and, also, the side they will take up. The date to be proposed for the debate is the 16th September, in Feiiding The Assembly Rooms will be hired for the purpose and a shilling entrance fee charged, the proceeds to be handed over to the Library Committee for furnishing the: new rooms. Mesdames T. Watson, J. Cobbe, S. Andrew and J. H.Stevens were requested to act as a Committee to/superidtencl the arrangements for supplying the visitors .with; refreshments. .
