Lord Brassey on the Duties of Governors.
[Per Press Association.! London, July 18. Mr Gillies, Agent-General for Victoria, presided at a farewell banquet to Lord Brassey. Sir W. Psrcival was amongst those present, The gathering was of a most representative character. Lord Brassey, replying to the toast of the evening, said an assemblage like the present one showed the desire there was to maintain the unity of the Empire. The greatest duty of a Colonial Government was to foster every kindly feeling that would serve to bind the silken fetters of mutual pride and affection between the Mother Country and her daughter States. As one of the most active advocates of Imperial Federation he could not reconcile it with his sense of public duty to decline the post when offered him.
