The Financial Statement is to be brought down ou the 26th iust. Mrs Wilson, of Cambridge, was placed in charge of the Ashurst Post Office yesterday. Lambing has already commenced in the Makino district, Mr J. H. Fry having about fifty or sixty amongst his flock. The famous Bee Ointment advertised by Messrs Havoc aud Lloyd is a splendid remedy for chapped hands ov chilblains. The terrible loss of sheep in the South Island in the snow storms, should have the effect of hardening prices in the North Island. We arc pleased to learn that Mr W. C. Maclean has so far recovered from his recent severe illness that he was able to be at his office on Tuesday. Notice is given by Mr Readc, solicitor, that at the next meeting of the Bankruptcy Court Dngald Henderson will , apply for his discharge. Arbor Day is near at hand therefore some movement should be made at once by the Borough Council, if it is intended to Jo any tree planting on that occasion. Mr Fred Beuuctfc, the English professional billiard player, has arrived in Feildiug, after a tour through India and South Africa, aud will give au exhibition to-morrow evening. Notice it given to-day by the Deputy Official Assignee that a meeting of creditors of Edward Lawrence, of Waituua West, will be held in the Feilding Court House on Monday, the 22ud instant, at 2 p.m. The best way to get rid of the insect pests of the colony is under consideration of the Government. It is expected when the mosquitoes arc tackled the department will be " brought up with a round turn." Messrs Hayno and Lloyd, produce merchants, have on view at their oiliccs some line specimens of potatoes grown by Mr Lockyer, of Kiwitca. One of the Breeze's weighs o.Ubs, and a fluke measures thirteen inches in length aud weighs 21bs. Messrs Ratliff Bros., Land and Commission agents, have au advertisement in to-day "which should be of interest to persons desirous of securing farm land or town properties. The Tivoli Specialty Company played in the Assembly Rooms last evening to a moderate attendance. An almost entirely different programme to the previous night was gone through. Several encores were demanded, the songs of the various performers meeting the approval of the audience, while the jokes created some amusement. Premier Cecil Rhodes, of South Africa is a veritable Colossus of finance- He is onty 40 years of age, yet he is said to be worth .£16,000,000 sterling. He is the son of a country clergyman, and originally went to South Africa with the slenderest means and for the benefit of his health. His career is not to be paralleled out of the pages of romance. We direct attention to an iuset which appears to-day from Messrs Warnock & Adkins, who have decided to close their Feilding branch on the 27th inst. Very large reductions have been made in every line, and the bargains to be secured are consequently of a really startling character. The goods are all new and of the very best class obtainable in the best markets of the world. Says tho Timaru Herald : If the weather does not change wifchm a very short time the majority of the thousands of sheep now bailed up will be past rescue. The poor animals are in a most pitiable condition. We have been told of weak sheep in camps being trampled down among the snow by stronger sheep, of some frozen together in half-dozens, and of others frozen fast to the ground and still retaining a pitiful vitality. Preparations arc being actively pushed forward at Colyton for the staging, by the school children, of " Little Boj' Blue." The stage will be provided with a drop curtain, footlights and scenery ; and the Cantata itself is full of truly pretty music. So, on August 6th, when the performance takes place, there should be a full house. The money is for the direct enjoyment of the children by way of prizes and recreation. Mr Robertson, head officer of the Telegraph Department, Wellington, arrived in Feilding to-day with a staff of men to peg out a telephone line between Cheltenham and Waituna. Tho work pegging out will be commenced to-mor-row, but it is not likely the erection of the wires will be commenced until about two months, as the mea are at present engaged on some other important work. It is probable Beaconsfield will also be connected with telephone. A young fellow named Simpson, son of a well known hotelkeeper, was last week in Sydney with a friend who had purchased a snake. By way of a joke the friend suddenly seized the snake and hung it as a necklace on Simpson's neck. The snake twisted itself around and bit Simpson on the lip. He went to a chemist, who referred hjm to a medical man, and when the services of a doctor were obtained' very severe remedies had to be adopted to save the man's life. One of the curiosities of railroad building is the construction of a road running from Ismid, a harbour about sixty Wles from Constantinople to Angora, about £00 miles. The bridges, sleepers, and ' telegraph poles, as well as the rails, are .of iron; nine-tenths of which, is of German manufactureThe bridges average about four to th.c mile, there being about 130.0 of them, the longest having a stretch of 593 feet. In addition to those there avo sixteen tunnels, the longest roonsnringl43o feet. This is the only railroad which penetrates the interior of Asiatic Turkey, the Smyrna, iiues being near, fug coajsfc.
The Feilding portion of the 'Frisco Mail will be sorted into private boxes by 9 o'clock to-night. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : - Indications for strong N.E. to E. and S. winds after 16 hours from now ; glass fall again soou. On Thursday the 24th instant Messrs Gorton and Sou will sell a consignment of trees from the famous orchard of Mr Mitchinson, of Now Plymouth. Messrs Gorton and Son will hold their usual stock sale in Feilding on Friday the2Gth iust., at the conclusion of which au excellent farm of 581 acres will be disposed of. It has been definitely arranged to bold the choral service in St. John's Church on Wednesday, July 31st. The united choirs from "the Feilding, Palmerston and Marton Churches will assist ; there will be about sixty voices in all. We notice that the publicans of Duuedin (says the Tuapeka Times) like all of their order just now, a very much maligned body of men, have contributed tho very handsome sum of .£l2B 18s to the destitute unemployed fund. The Excelsior Skating Rink, in the Volunteer Hall, was largely attended yesterday afternoon and evening, the increased accommodation being appreciated by rinkists. As au additional attraction for Wednesday evening next there will be a potato race, which should cause some amusement. The manager is endeavoring to arrange a polo match between Palmerston and Feildiug.
