Local and General News.

The Excelsior Skating Rink (at the Volunteer Hall) will be opened this evening. Mr H. W. Brabant has beeu gazetted as judge of the Native Appellants Court. Members of the Gladstone Small Farm Association will meet this evening at 7 o'clock. The next meeting of thc Wellington Laud Board will bo held on Thursday, lst of August. We learn that Mr Joseph Burne has sold his 200 acre section to Mr S. Taylor Gee, through Mr Sandeman, of Birmingham. The annual meeting of parishioners in the Feilding parochial district will be held in Miss Goodbehere's school room on Friday evening at 8 p.m. A Chess match by telegraph between the Rangitikei and Pahiatua Chess Clubs will take place next Saturday night, the 20th, at the respective post offices. Mr Hooper, the well-known dentist, desires us to state that he will arrive in Feilding by the mid-day train, instead of at 10.30, on Thursday next to attend to his professional duties. We are informed by the Hawera Star that a meeting of West Coast native leaseholders has been convened for tomorrow for the purpose of forming a league. One plank of the league will be the conversion of the reserves into Crown Lands. We are informed by a Wanganui correspondent that Mr Fred Bennett, an English professional billiard player who is making a tour of the world, will visit Feilding in a few days when he will give an exhibition of his skill. Particulars will be duly advertised. We have to thank the Wellington agent of the Union Steam Shipping Company for a copy of the guide book entitled " The Australian and American line, via New Zealand, round the world." The illustrations are beautifully done and the maps " up to date " in every respect. A couple of business men went into a Feilding Hotel the other morning, the one to draw ancl the other to receive a cheque. Neither pen nor ink was available until after a long search. The giver of the cheque said " I always heard Feilding was a solid place, ancl now I am sure of it. Very little " booking " done in the Hotels." The section is 100 acres in area and is composed of a deep loamy soil, besides wnich natural advantage it fronts a good metalled road within easy access of the Apiti Cheese Factory. Particulars may be obtained on application to this oflice, or directions may be obtained from the Apiti Hotel. The Paris Charivari makes a novel suggestion for doing away with the theatre hat. It asks : " Why not separate the audience, placing the women on one side and the men on the other side of the house ? if the women had ot choose between the separation of the sexes ancl the adoption of a less objectionable style of the hat at the theatre, the presumption is that they would not hesitate to discard the hats and reclaim their escorts. Such a measure would prove more effective than all the laws that legislature could pass. " There was a large attendance at the Debating Society last evening. Thc debate on the subject " Docs money exercise a greater power than moral force," was opened by Mr Cobbe and the Rev. Innes Jones, and was fully discussed, the voting at the close being 11 for the affirmative and 9 for the negative. The debate was an exceedingly interesting one. A motion by Mr Cooper to convert the societj' into a parliamentary union was altered to read next " year," and was carried. A communication was received from the Palmersten Mutual Improvement Society re holding a public debate at Feilding between the two societies, and the matter was left to the committee to arrange. The next debate is : " Should the liquor traffic be abolished,, or placed more -directly under I State control.

Captain Edwin wired at 12.20 p.m. today : " Indications for strong North to East and South-East winds, with rain, after 16 hours ; glass fall." A dairy school will be opened at Stratford on August lst, when a course of instruction will be given to managers and assistants of cheese and butter factories. The Marton Jockey Club have decided to hold a two days' meeting on the llth and 12th September. About L350 is to be given away in prize money, and the events include four hunters steeplechases, hack steeplechase, hurdles, and flat races. The meeting will be held at York Farm. An important sale will be held by Gorton and Son, at the Temperance Hotel, Campbelltown, on the 24th inst., when some valuable town property, including the sale yards and the Temperance Hotel and household furniture, horses, harness and sundries will be disposed of. We learn from the Wanganui Herald that Mr J. J. Boyle, the manager of the Mercury, left Wanganui with his family for Marton last Monday afternoon. They carry with them the best wishes of the Wauganui people for their happiness and success. Mr Boyle will be a decided acquisition to Marton, where his knowledge of business and energy of character must tell.
