The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwiea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, JULY 16, 1895. THE KTWITEA BRIDGE.

In our last issue we intimated that the Government, at the request of the Mayor, Mr Sandilands, had directed Mr R. W. Holmes, Government Engineer, to advise the Borough Council in the matter of protecting the banks of the Makino and Kiwitea streams.

[n the interest of the Borough we uertainly hope that, all possible precautions being taken to obviate future damage by floods, the work of making tbe bridge over the Kiwitea on the Kimbolton road will be pushed on. The amount of trade which is diverted Erom the up country settlements to other townships is very considerable, owing to the facts that the crossing is not always safe, and no lights are placed in position for the guidance of travellers after dark in finding the tortuous tracks which lead to tbe ford from either side. A prominent settler in the Kiwitea stated recently that the want of energy shown by the burgesses of Feilding, as represented by the Council, was a subject of ridicule among the farmers, and be suggested that tbe storekeepers and business people generally should take action themselves and endeavour to infuse a little life into the Councillors. Of course he looked at the subject from the standpoint of a producer, and one who does not understand that railroad speed is impossible in municipal matters. Still, this shows tbe feeling, and although several of the residents in the other Road Districts, which have been included in the rating to pay for the proposed new bridge, were very bitter at first against Feilding for its action, yet now they are satisfied to accept the inevitable, and would be very pleased indeed to see the structure completed. It may cost a little more but the convenience would more than compensate. We hope Mr Holmfs will soon have his survey completed, and that his advice will be accepted and acted upon without cavil.
