A CHILD BURNED TO DEATH.

(Per Press Association). Oamaru, July 15. A three-roomed cottage was destroyed by fire this morning, a little girl named Slater, seven years old, being burned to death. Christchurch, July 15. After the meeting of the City Council to-night Mr Turton, retiring Superintendent of Fire Brigade, was presented with a gold star and certificate for twenty years service from the Fire Brigade Association, a purse of one hundred sovereigns from citizens and an address from the old Brigade. A largely attended meeting by prohibitionists, was held at the Opera House tonight, when some of the Prohibitionist witnesses in Coker's Hotel case made statements similar in effect to_ the evidence given before the Licensing Committee. No motion was proposed. Afc the quarterly meeting of the Durham Street Wesleyan Circuit a motion was carried regarding the recent decision of the House of Representatives re the Lottery proposals, and Mr La wry's Bill as affording the most gratifying indication of the extent to which the increasingly active interest taken by the Christian churches in the movement of moral and social reform affecting legislature. A start was made to-day with the erection of the buildings for the Industrial Exhibition to be held here early next month. Hokitika, July 15. Mrs McFadzen, an old resident of the Kanieri, was found dead iv a waterhole alongside Kanieri road this morning.
