A bicycling corps of Volunteers is to bo formed in Nelson if the required 43 men can be enrolled. A silver mounted hunting whip is advertised as lost. Reward will be given on returning same to Star office. Mounted Constable Heally arrived in Feilding to-day to assist Constable Tuohy in his police duties in this dis trict. A unique concert is being arranged by the local Primitive Methodist Church to be produced shortly. It will consist entirely of old fashioned singing of old fashioned songs by old fashioned people. Messrs Gorton and Son will hold a stock sale at Awahuri on the 19th iust., and not Sauson, as erroneously advertised in our last issue. Additions are made to the sale to-day. At the Williamstown (Victorian) races last -week visitors were invited to sign a petition in favour of legalising the totalisator. A large number did so ; but before the afternoon's sport was concluded the petition w 7 as stolen. Mr G. "W. Russell wants to have the names of the two defaulters at Bellamy's published — but he does not state who would pay the expenses of the libel action against the newspapers which would follow as sure as night follows day. At the meeting of creditors in the estate of Albert Barns, auctioneer of Wangauui, after a very lengthy examination it was decided that the D.O.A. be requested to tile a certificate for a public examination of the debtor. We learn from the Manawatu Times that petitions are in circulation and being largely signed by settlers in the neighborhood of Palmerston requesting the Farmers' Alliance to resume the business of holding stock sales at their various yards. The Palmerston North Sash and Door Company has obtained a contract for the supply of 10,000 butter boxes to the National Dairy Association of New Zealand. The Association has also accepted the tender of Burgess and Son, of Stratford, for supplying 20,000 butter boxes and a like number of cheese cases. The Feilding Debating Sociefy will meet in Mr Bray's office to-morrow evening. Subject : " Does money exercise a greater force than moral power ? " Mr J. Cobbe will lead in the affirmative and the Rev A. Innes Jones in the negative. Any persons not members of the society and interested in the debate are invited to attend. The news of the death of Mr James Alexander, one of Wauganui's oldest settlers — and indeed one of the oldest settlers in the colony— will be received with deep regret by the community. Mr Alexander, who had been ailing for some time, passed away just before five o'clock last evening at the ripe age of 77 years. — Chronicle. Dr Coughtrey, of Dunediu, the Honorary Correspondent of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia, has received information, says the Otago Daily Times, that Mr John Fraser, of Ravensbourne, who was one of those who exhibited great courage at the wreck of the s.s. Wairarapa, has been awarded the silver medal of the Society. The local branch of the well known Te Aro House advertise to-day that they are offering bargains in drapery and clothing during the present week. It will be seen on reference to the adver. tisement that, amongst other lines, blankets, flannelettes, gloves and straw hats are being offered at reduced prices. The manager invites an inspection of his extensive stock. The Excelsior Skating Rink was crowded on Saturday, the attendance being larger than on any previous occasion. The manager having made arrangements with the volunteers for the use of the drill hall for skating, patrons of the rink will have increased comforts while indulging in the pastime. An additional supply of fifty new skates arrived to-day and will be ready for use on Wednesday next. A serious accident occurred on Friday at Beaconsh'eld. A lady was returning from a wedding, which had taken place in that rising settlement, on horseback, with an infant in her arms. From some unknown cause the horse bolted, and unseated the rider who was dragged, for some distance with her ioot in the stirrup. Some neighbor stopped the horse and the lady was released from her unpleasant position, quite insensible. A medical man was soon on the spot and did all that was necessary. The child escaped uninjured. The importance of a bridge over the Oroua river at Apiti has not been lost sight of by Cr Vicary, whose riding is chiefly interested in its erection and a motion proposed by him at the meeting of the Pohangina County Council on Saturday, and seconded by Cr Bell, was carried to the effect " That the secretary at once apply to the Colonial Treasurer for the loan of .£IOOO for. the construction of the Oroua Valley bridge and, also, write to Mr Pirani, M.H.R., asking him to use bis influence in obtaining said loan, this sum to come out of next year's loan money." The Mayor, Mr W. A. Sandilands, has received advice from the Lands and Survey Department to the effect that Mr R. W. Holmes, Government Engineer, would be instructed to advise the Council in the matter of protecting the banks of the Makino and Kiwitea streams, but that the Council would have to pay the cost of any survey work. This coneeasion has been granted on the application of the Mayor, who made the request so as to get the best possible advice before proceeding with the construction of the Kiwitea bridge aud, also, with a view to making future protective works in the Makino stream effective. Mr Sandilands is to be congratulated outhc success of bis application.
