. A public tea meeting will be held iv the Salvation Array Barracks to-morrow evening, and afterwards a service of song. Pohangina cricketers are invited to attend a meetiiig in the Public Hall on Saturday next, at 4 p.m., to arrange several matters for next season. Mr James Scott, the well-known watchmaker and jeweller, has lately received some very beautiful specimens of art jewellery. The bankruptcy of Mr Albert Barnes, auctioneer, Wangauvri, is announced. The liabilities are £5635 8s 7d, and the deficiency £4066 2s Id. Messrs Stevens and Wood, sawrnillcrs, of Awahuri, insert a notice of importance to builders and others interested in the trade. Owing to the Foresters' Hall being engaged for the Masonic meeting on Friday next, the usual fortnis/htly meeting of the Oddfellows' Lodge will be held in Mr Bray's office, at 7.30 o'clock. A concert will be hold iv the Taonui schoolhouse this evening in aid of the school funds. As the vocalists are all favorites we would advise our Taonui readers not to miss this opportunity of spending an enjoyable evening. The head master of one of the largest London schools considers that the necessity of caning boys is a confession of incapacity. The schoolmaster, he said, should be able to enforce discipline without degenerating into a bruiser. In the crush to obtain admission to an entertainment at the City Hall, Auckland, recently, a young lady, says the Star, came in contact with a hat pin in another lady's headgear, with the result that a portion of the pin entered her arm and broke off. Residents of this district will be pleased to learn that the Justice JJeparfcmcut have at last appointed a resident clerk to the Court at Feilding, Constable J. J. Tuohy being appointed to that position. Mounted Constable Heally will be transferred from Wellington to take up Cpnstable Tuoby's police duties. To-day's StanaaviJ says; Another slip came down in the Gorge yesterday, arid as a result, the usual train arrangements were somewhat upset. The Pohangina County Council will meet on Saturday next. Tenders are invited by Dr Johnston for felling 200 acres of bush, Oroua Coal Creek. The Fire Brigade had a good practice last evening, Captain Eade, Lieutenant Newman, and a dozen members were in attendance. A quiet wedding took place at Bulls yesterday when Mr George Reid was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss P. Hathaway. The ceremony being performed by the Rev. J. D. Russell. Tho Blenheim Express understands that Mr John Mowat, a resident of Marlborough, has received the appointment of Inspector of Stock for the Falkland Islands, applications for which were invited by the New Zealand Government a short while ago. The very many friends of Mr C. W. Maclean, of Bulls, will be sorry indeed to henr of his serious illness, his condition causing the gravest anxiety. No one is better or more fovonrably known up and down the coast than Mr Maclean, and news of his restoration to health will be pleasing indeed. Mercantile circles in Wellington arc much exercised (says the Post) over rumours in connection with the manner in which a contract for the supply of stores of certain descriptions has been carried out by the contracting fii'in. The matter is likely to come before Parliament, aud possibly before other tribunals as well. A Hawera resident who has been visiting the United States has suggested to the Industries Department that au experimental consignment of rimu doors and rimu furniture be sent to New York, where he considers there would he a good demand for red pine furniture, aud that it would not meet with the competition from other woods that it meets with when sent to London for paving purposes. At a meeting of the Harmonic Society held last night it was decided to give a concert on Wednesday, 28th of August next. The first part to consist of miscellaneous items, aud the sccoud part the cantata "Rose Maiden." It was also decided to form an orchestra to work in conjunction with the Society. Mrs Macarthur, Dr Sovley, and Messrs J. C. Hill and Greenwood were selceted as a sub-committee to procure suitable music for the second concert to be held about the end of November. A number of members of the " Hope of Apiti " Temperance Lodge journeyed into the Birmingham township oif Saturday niyht with the object of forming a Temperance Lodge. A meeting was held iv the Hall, Mr Watson, Past Chief in the chair. An address was delivered by the Rev. T. Richards, advocating temperance. The following officers of the Apiti Lodge were in attendance : — A. Dick, Lodge Deputy; Miss Carter, Chaplain ; H. Osbornc, Treasurer ; E. LcProu, Marshall ; H. Hough ton, Yicc Templar ; T. Yorkc, Financial Secretary. A Lodge was formed in Birmingham, about six members joining.
