*. The Excelsior Seating Bink was again crowded on Saturday evening. We have received the first member of Hansard from the Government Printer. Mr Carr advcrLises to let 324 acres of well grassed hmd. The rent is reasonable, j Mounted-Constable Hcally will leave Wellington in a few days for Feildmg, ' whither he has been transferred. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : — N.E. to N. and W. gale with rain after 12 hours from now ; glass fall again soon. A farm of about 1170 acres, two miles from the Turakiua JR-ailway Station, was sold at Wellington, for L4OOO, the purchaser being Mr R, K. Simpson, Marton. Mr Collins Payment of Jurors Bill provides for all jurors, whether grand, special, or common, receiving 7s Gd a day for every day's attendance at Court. Mr R. W. Holmes, Engineer, has been instructed by tiie Public Works Department to report on the condition of the bridge across the Piangitikei river, Bulls. The Rangitikci County Council intend to apply to the Government for a loan to cover cost of repairs to the Onepuhi bridge. Tenders arc to be called immediately for work at this bridge. The Town Clerk gives notice that Mr W. B. Barker has been appointed pound- ! keeper and ranger for the Borough of Feilding in place of Mr F. Barker, who has resigned. Mr Stevens, M.H.R., wants local bodies' loan polls decided on a threefifths majority, and that absentee ratepayers shall not be reckoned as having yoted against such proposals. The enterprising firm of Messrs Haync and Lloyd ha\c a new advertisement in today, drawing attention to the farm seeds' and produce they have on stile at their premises in Fcrgns.son struct. Thorn was only one bankruptcy in Wellington last month, and only 25 petitions have been filed during the last six months, as against 87 for the same period last year. The amount invested on mortgage in the colony on olst March, 1898, was as against £29.600,579 in 1894 and £27,904,465 in 1893. That hardly looks as if capital was leaving the colony. At Messrs Abraham and Williams' horse sale at Palmcrstcn on Saturday a small entry of horses came forward, busiuess being of a quiet description. Hacks reached £5 14s to £9 ; screws, i'l ss. The bird-fancier has been at work in Campbelltown and annexed thirty fowls from one resident, and cleaned the roosts of two others. An attempt has been made to put the blame on a dog— but no dogs wears hob-nailed boots. At last meeting of the Wauganui Harbor Board, a letter was read from MiBaker, Commissioner of Crown Lands, intimating that he intended visiting Pohangina and would report to the Board as to the desirability or otherwise of at present offering the unsold township sections' for sale. Clause 41 of the Advances to Settlers Act, which prevents settlers who may be ia arrears in their rent from borrowing under the Act, is considered by the country members as one of the drawbacks to the measure. In many cases settlers merely wanted to borrow the money to pay off arrears of rent. The Minister of Lands has promised to remedy this drawback. At the Bankruptcy Court In Wnnganui last Thursday the case of Winifred Morey, motion of discharge, came on. The D.O.A stated that the bankruptcy was due to debtor endorsing her husband's trade bills, and opposed the motion, on the ground that the debtor was the possessor of an equity of redemption at Feilding, which she sold, giving the proceeds to several of her creditors, leaving out one of them — Mr Scott. In answer to the D.0.A., debtor stated that she had endeavoured to get Mr Scott's claim recognised, but the other creditors pressed her, — Order for discharge granted — Chronicle. How is it, w r e wonder, that colonists when they got Home are so inclined to " draw the long bow ? " Mr Ward's exaggerations were palpable, and now we find Mr James Frcyberg signing himself " Timber Expert for New Zealand," writing in the British Australasian about " rich timber growing in endless profusion in the Britain of the South," Unfortunately there is no rich •■' endless profusion " of rich timber in this colony now. On the contrary, the supplies of the best descriptions of New Zealand timber are likely before long to be utterly insufficient to meet the demand for local consumption. The process of wasteful destruction has been carried on too long. — Post. An incipient fire was discovered yesterday afternoon, at about 3.15., in a shop occupied by Mr F. J. Petherick, saddler, in Fergussou street, by a man named StubbsalodgerinHalley's boarding House, which is a portion of the .same building. The fire was located in the front of the shop where the different articles appertaining to a saddler's business are exhibited for sale. The alarm was promptly given and Messrs W. Hall, IJ. Whisker, R. Newman, Eustace Haybittle and a number of others were quickly on the sc^ne. The fire only having obtained hold of the scrim and paper on the wall adjacent to the window a few buckets of water removed all danger and the assistance of the Fire Brigade, who turned out with the engine, was not required. The cause of thcfircisunknownand.it can only be surmised that the rays of the sun fo cussed through the window, lamp glass, or bottles displayed in the window, must have ignited sornein/iammable material.
