(Per Press Association). Mklijournk, July 4. The Government proposal to fix duty ou woollen goods at !}"> per cent, has been negatived in the Legislative Assembly. A proposal to make ifc 20 per cent, was also rejected, but tho Assembly agreed to 30 per cent, duty, with a reduction to 25 per cent, after January 1597. The Coal Creek quarrel has been amicably arranged, and the men have returned to work. This Day. A return presented to Parliament dealing with non-paying railways iv the colony shows that on thirty-one lines the revenue is insufficient to cover the working expenses, leaving tho interest on the cost of construction totalh' unprovided for. Fourteen lines show a small profit over the working expenses, but insufficient cover interest. The total loss ou the i'ortj'-iivo last vcar was •1-260,000. Mr Howitt, Secretary of Mines, has been appointed to the vacant Audit Cominissionership. Adklajdk, July o. Bishop Hariner was installed with imposing ceremony in the Cathedral. In tho course of his sermon he said the attitude of Anglicans towards Roman and Western Churches was for reconciliation not absorption.
