The Half-Holiday Question.
(Pek Press Association). Auckland* July 3. In the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Justice Connolly heard the appeal by the GoyVrnment against the decision of the Magistrate dismissing the charge against $. S. Dadiey for keeping his shop pA Saturday afternoon. His Honor slid he would deal only with the one'point as to whether the Act j was or <tpas not in force before January, 1896, as tne Stipendiary Magistrate h|d not considered the other points. I Mr Cboper urged that it was the intentiob of the Legislature to give the public^of the colony an opportunity of decidinj?;; on the best day during the twelve months before the Act would come into force compelling them to dose on -any particular day. His Honor said he would not yen ture to advise the Magistrate as to the decisions he should give, but he should be very Chappy to send the case back to the Magistrate to be retried. However, he was not snre about his power to dp so. He would take time to consider his decision.
