_-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-__-___r \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\w^= t< FAIR. — : — * . reference to an item we re- l< cently quoted from the Manawatu Times to the effect that efforts were c being made to induce " a well-known I farmers combination " to bold peri- c odical sales of stock, our contemporary yesterday further stated on the sub- & j ec t : _"It is suggested tbat these sales should be more in the nature of « fairs, a yardage fee only being charged s if no sale is effected, and commission v only being paid ou actual sales. It will also be a condition that the rate n of commission shall be considerably o below five per cent, and that neither o the institution nor the auctioneer shall ° compete in the market with producers, fc . or act otherwise than as agents. The matter is being submitted to the -\ directors of tho institution, and it is « probable a meeting of farmers will f< shortly bo convened to consider this t. important subject. Our readers will R no doubt remember that some such scheme as the one suggested above, - v was attempted before, but was the v reverse of successful. The farmers in _ the immediate vicinity of Feilding a have made no movement, nor are they n likely to until they are better informed o on tho subject.
