J A young man named Frank Messenger is in the hospital suffering from swallowing thirteen match-heads. He was gum-digging in the Hunia district, but [ not being fortunate came to town. He said he tried to get work when he came , to Auckland but failed. lie was driven almost to desperation through hunger and want of work. He is now progressj ing favorably. A school of 27 whales has been stranded on the Muruwai Beach, near Kaipara Heads. They were evidently blown ashore by the western gale, and were all alive at noon to-day. They measure 30ft to 50ft in length, and extend along the beach for two miles. Two hotels in the city were robbed on • Sunday—the Rising Sun and the Caledonian .- DujN'edin, July 1. A man named James Reid, with a number of aliases, has been arrested by Detective O'Connor on the charge of • breaking into the Christchurch Museum • and stealing articles to the value of over £40. Reid had only just landed from the 3 Coriuna. The executors of the late Dr Stuart ■ haye handed over to the University Council for the Museum a snuff-mull, which had been the property of the poet Burns. Napier, July 1.
