ipke press •.RsnrrATifi".) AVj:llin<;tox, Juno 26. jMcssrs J. Stevens ;iiul Fred. Pirani, M's.H.R., introduced a deputation of sawiv.illerp. comprising Messrs Cornfoot (Halcombe) .Bailey (Feilding) and Spurdle (AVanganui), to tho Minister for Railways to u>gc a reduction in rates on white pine for export. The mills in the district were capable of turning out feet weekly, and there was a demand in Australia, but present prices and freights only left os per 100ft at the tniiJ, and that was not sufficient for working oxperises. If the railway rates were reduced like those on firewood a valuable export trade would spring up, and they asked for a reduction oi ; at least Gd per 100ft (the present rate is Is Gd for 50 miles): The Minister said that firewood was now being carried at a loss to encourage settlement, and he could not promise such a rate as that but would go into the matter and bring it before the Cabinet so as to see what could be done to assist the industry.
