FEILDING v. PALMERSTON.
A Senior Cup malch was played on tho Oval on Saturday afternoon be- t tween teams representing the Feilding t and Palmerston Clubs, and after a 1 close contest resulted in a win for the former by nine points (three tries) to t nil. The match was, however, played r uuder protest, Palmerston objecting J? to the Feilding team including Stuart and Martini, two players who joined \ tho Awahuri Club at the beginning of r_ tilt? season, but this Club having dis- \ banded about a fortnight ago the f players mentioned joined tho Feilding Club, to which they formerly be j longed. Although the weather was c fine on Saturday the ground was very sloppy from recent rain, and the gamo was, consequently, chiefly confined to the forwards. In the first ipell Palmerston defended the northern goal and for the first twenty minutes the play was uninteresiing, tbo forwards trying to pick up the ball too often, 1 ut occasionally it came out. to the three-quarters. While in the visitors' twenty- fives, Feilding was awarded a free kick and Palmerston was forced down from Matravers' kick. About half an hour from the commencement of the play Cox headed a dribbling rush towards the Feilding goal line. Parr returned the ball to touch and the game became a little moi"e interesting. W. Bailow, B. Whisker, J. Mat ravers, in the forward division, put in some good woik for Feilding, wl.il ' the halves, Shannon and Jack, paascd out to tht-ir three quarters very well and Richards made some smart runs, but some of his passes were wild, which raay.be accounted f )r by the slippery state of tho ball. The first spell ended without any score being made. On the second spell being started Jack, Matravers and Stuart responded to a Palmerston rush, headed by Bell to the visitors' twenty-fives, where P. Giesen obtained a mark. Barlow had a try at goal hut the ball went low and Palmerston were forced down. A few minutes aftei wards Robinson had a "shot" at goal, without result. Feilding continue 1 the attack and Barlow following up a kick by Jack scored a try for Foiliiing. He took the kick at goal himself, but failed to increase the score. From this the game became looter and Darroch, Bell, Prendergast and Podevin tried to equalise matters, but the Feilding forwards had too much weight and smothered their opponents. B. Whisker and Bulow took the ball from tho centre of the field to Palraorston twenty-fives, where Shannon got tho ball and passed sa.artiy to Richards, who scored the second try for Feil.iing. Malravers' kick at goal did not increase the score. Jack, Shannon, and Robinson tried hard to score again and passed well considering the state of the ground. For Palmerston Keeling and Jewell played a good defensive game. Weight, the Palmerston full-back, faiied to take a long kick from Robinson, aud Barlow following up fast with Robinson, the latter sue ceeded in scoring a third try for Feilding. A> few minutes after this time was called. The game was starlei so late that it was almost dark when concluded, and it is a pity that fiese matches are not started a little earlier in the afternoon, say, three o'clock at the latest. The Feilding team played a vdry fine game, and if they can be kept together for the remainder of the season should give a good account of themselves. Palonerston was outmatched on the heavy ground by the opposing forwards, although they worked hard to avert defeat. Mr A. C. Matheson made an impartial referee, and Messrs Fake and R. Whisker acted as line umpires.
