THE MEMBER FOR RANGITIKEI.
TO THE EDITOK OF THE STAR. Sir, — Having l)een continuous!}' engaged from the 3rd of February until the 31st of May on the Tariff Commission i; has therefore been impossible for the large majority of its members to have dolivered their pre sessional address. Personally, I could have done so. My colleagues, however, desired that a resolution should be passed requesting our constituents to excuse us for not having given the usual account of our Parlia mentary stewardship. Such a resolu lion was passed and given to tho Press Association lor the purpeseof publication throughout tin-' colony. It doe i not, however, appear to have reached the " Stau." In jus tico to those ef tho electors who have not become acquainted with tho circumstances I huve given this short explanation. Permit me, also, to say that the rumour which has been circulated to the effect that members of the Tariff Commission have received £o per diem for their servi ei is untrue. The Disqualification Act dots not permit members of Pai iament to rereivo more than £1 pur diem as travelling expenses. I am, &c, John Steven's. Feikling, Juno LUsr, 189-i
