An Interesting Point.

(Per Press Association). Wellington, June 19. In the Supreme Court to-day Mra M. A. McLean, wife of a -grocer, claimed £525 from Mrs Willis, otherwise known as Noonan, for slander. Judge Richmond at the outset expressed a doubt as to whether, even supposing a verdict was obtained, it would stand. The law in England 1 was that an imputation againßt a woman of unchastity was not actionable, unless made in writing and unless special damage was shewn. He was not quite clear whether it was not the same in this colony. He never knew whether something had not been done since he last sat to alter the law. Defendant did not appear and the jury returned a verdict for £50, the question of law raised by His Honor being reserved for future consideration.
