The Mysterious Death in Welhngton.
A VERDICT OF MANSLAUGHTER. (Per Press Association). Wellington, June 17. At the adjourned inquest into the circumstances connected with tbe death of the woman Louie Smith, who died from tbe result of burns received during the quarrel in a Chinaman's house, the evidence went in the direction to show that Andrew and Joseph Kennedy, with Joseph Jewett, who are in custody on a charge of causing the woman's death forced their way into the house where tliey found a friend named Robert Wilson lying on an opium bed with the womau Smith. A row ensued and in the struggle tho lamp was thrown over, but by whom the testimony is conflicting, one witness declaring it was Andrew Kennedy who threw the lamp, while another declared Jewett. None of the witnesses were able to give a clear account of what happened, aud Wilson himself states the woman Fmith was not sober at the time. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against either Andrew Kennedy or Jewett. All parties connected with the unfortunate affair, including the Chinaman, were formerly residents of Dunedin.
