» ' The Wanganui Education Board meets tbis evening. Mr E. G. Jcllicoe intends to contest a Wellington seat for the House of Representatives. Mr Charles Carr will hold a stock sale at Birmingham to-morrow (Tuesday) at 1 o'clock. A concert will be held in the Kiwitea Hall this evening at 8 o'clock, in aid of the Weslcyan church funds. A social and dance is to be held on Wednesday next at Awahuri in aid of the Awahuri Public Library funds. Iv the last Gazette notice is published that 1-1,459 acres of land in the Wellington district are reserved for primary education. At the Palnierston District Court last Saturday the bankruptcy case of Adolph Goldfinch, of Pohangina, was declared closed. Two sections of land in the Manchester Block offered for sale on Saturday by Messrs Abraham and Williams were passed in at XS 19s per acre.— Standard. The growing of rape for sheep fattening is strongly recommended in the Australasian and this crop, besides, enriches the soil on which it is grown. The famous Australasian Guards' Band will give a performance in the Assembly Rooms at 8 o'clock on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The regular monthly meeting of the Feilding Lodge of Freemasons will be held this evening at the Foresters' Hall Bowen street We have to apologise to our subscribers on the Awahuri road and in Campbclltown for the non delivery of their papers on last Saturday afternoon. We renriud those interested of the conversazione under the auspices of the Presbyterian congregation, which will be held in the Assembly Rooms this evening, commencing at 7.150 o'clock. Mr J. Frederick Fohrman, Rudolph and Frank Lukaschewski have been committed for trial at the Supreme Court, New Plymouth, on charges of stealing sheep from Mr J. G. Wilson, M.H.R.'s run. Messrs Bramwell Bros., have a special notice in to-day drawing attention to a shipment of dinner and tea services just received from London. They have also received a consignment of wall papers of new designs, which they are offering at reduced prices. On Saturday last young Victor Morphy met with a serious accident. He was getting off a trap when his foot slipped and got caught between the shaft and the step with the result that his left leg was broken below the knee. Dr Charlton set the injured limb and the youngster is progressing favorabty. There are about forty co-operative men now employed under Mr Snow on road work (making bridle tracks) iv the Salisbury and Umutoi blocks, the roads they are working on being Apiti-Norse-wood, Main Cross road east (which has now connected with a road leading from Pohangina) and bushfelling has almost been completed on the Makiekie road, which also runs to PohanginaThe North Otago Times says the Adelaide telegram which states that South Australian wheat is being bought for New Zealand is quite correct. The wheat is for Invercargill. The Invergill mills must have hard wheat, and it is as cheap to act it from Adelaide as from Canterbury or North Otago. The price lauded at Invercargill will be 4s 2£ to 4s 3d, and it could not be lauded there cheaper if bought in North Otago or Canterbury. The concert and dance held under the auspices of the Druids at Flowlers, was a splendid success. A long programme was presented, and all went off excellent. About oO couples were present at the dance. The music for the dance was supplied by Messrs Fanthorpe, Barlow Bros., and Chunn, and accompaniments were 'efficiently played by Mrs Tompkins, Messrs Bayues and Chunn. The concert opened with an overture by the orchestra ; song, " That is love," Mr Barlow, encored ; recitation by Mr Bastings was encored, and he responded with " The lost child ;" duet by Meadames Palmer and Tompkins, "The Rivulet ;" Mrs A Mcßeth gave " Called back" nicely, and was encored ; a recitation by Mr Moss, " The Vagabond," was produced to life. Song, " Whisper and I shall hear," Mrs Palmer : duet, " Friendships," by Mesdames Church and Tompkins. A letter was received by the Pohangina County Council on Saturday, from D. L. A. Astbury, chairman of public meeting held at Stratford, enclosing the following resolution, viz., " That the settlers in the Stratford County are confident that the time has arrived for an adjustment in the Valuation Act, by exempting all improvements so that the unimproved value of land bear the taxation in order that every one, either owner or occupier, shall have to pay their own share of the same." It was decided to support the principle, and it was resolved on the motion of Cr Wagstaff, seconded by Mr Vicary, That this Council co-operate with the Stratford ratepayers in getting an adjustment in the present Valuation Act exempting all improvements. At the meeting of the Pohangina County Council on Saturday last, it was resolved on the motion of the Councillor for the Mangapikopiko (Apiti) riding, Mr W. Vicary, " That this Council will support the Norsewood Road Board in petitioning the Government urging that the Ngamako-Norsewood road be completed to Apiti ; also that the secretary write to the Kiwitea County Council asking that body to co-operate with this body in the matter." The road referred to is on the eastern side of the liualuue ranges and when completed will open up connection, through the Pohaa«ina «orgc, with this coast from Hawke's Bay. On the Apiti side of the ranges there is already a small gang of co-oper-ative men at work, and the road has been laid of and cleared for about twelve miles from Apiti, but only about three miles are metalled.

I The resignation of Mr J. W. F. Halcombe, as Lieutenant of the Manchester Rifles, bas been gazetted. Yesterday morning at Apiti Mr C. S. Potts met with on accident by cutting : bis foot very severely -when chopping : wood. About four years ago Mr Potts met with a similar accident. A large number of entries have been received by the Sheep-breeders' Assocition in Sydney for the first show, open* ing on June 29th. They include all the chief New Zealand breeders, who will be strongly represented in the long-wool classes. To-day's Times reports the death of a woman named Louie Smith, who was taken to the Wellington hospital on Thursday night suffering from burns received at a house in Haining street. She suddenly became unconscious, and died about a quarter of an hour afterward. Two men named Kennedy and Hewitt, were arrested on Saturday on the charge of being concerned in the aißair. j A telegram from Wellington to day says the men Kennedy and Hewitt, who were before the court on the charge of being concerned in the death of the woman youth, have been remanded.]
