Henry Eose a well known figure in athletic circles, died yesterday from tuberculosis and meningitis supervening after repeated attacks of influenza. Wellington, June 8. In the Wanganui case, Surman v. W. Akers, motion for a new trial, the jury having awarded plaintiff i'4so damages for illegal distraint, the Chief Justice found that though they were very large damages, they were not so excessive as to justify the conclusion of misconduct on the part of the jury or a misapprehension by them of their duty. The motion was refused, with ten guineas costs. Cheistchubch, June 8. A deputation waited on the Premier and asked for legislation giving power to have men and woman convicted of vagrancy medically examined, and if suffering from contagious disease, to be committed to the Lock Hospital till cured. Mr Soddon undertook to bring the matter under the notice of the Minister of Justice. The Premier returned to Wellington by the Penguin from Lyttelton this afternoon. ____
