The Half-Holiday Question.
(Per Press Association). Wellington, June 7. In banco this morning before Judge Richmond an appeal against a conviction under the Shops and Sliod Assistants Act was heard. Mr Hntchinson, S.M. had in March last fined W. JEL Day of Greytown foi? keeping a shop on open Saturday, the day appointed by the Borough Council for the half-holiday, and this decision was appealed against. Mr Skerrett, who appeared in support of the appeal submitted ' January next " where used in section 9 of the Act, must be held to mean January 1896. He also urged the Borough Council meeting at which the special resolution was passed, was improperly called. Mr Chapman for the respondent argued the Statute must be taken to speak from the date of the Royal assent. Judge Richmond remarked that at present he did not think there was much in that point raised by Mr Chapman, who contended the Council meeting was legally called. His Honor said as the matter was of general importance he j would give a written judgment.
