A Much-Needed Reform.
At the meeting of tho Wellington Land Board yesterday, the Commissioner pointed out that several successful applicants for sections had lost their chance, owing to not being present or employing agents, according to the regulations, so that the deposit could be paid immediately after the ballot. Mr Pirani, M.H.H., contended that the regulations were ultra vires, as the Act distinctly stated that the applicant must be notified of the result, not that he must attend to be notified. Besides, the regulation was unnecessarily harassing, and if the Department had adopted his suggestion to pay the deposits into the nearest Post Office, all this trouble would have been avoided. He protested against people being compelled to go to the expense of attending a ballot or employing an agent, merely to suit the convenience of the Department. Mr Hogg considered the regulation entailed hardship. The Commissioner said it might be advisable to make some alteration to the regula tions in regard to giving notice to successful applicants.— Standard.
