FEILDING STATE SCHOOL.
TO THE KDITOK OF THE STAIi. Sir, — On behalf of parents, I would like to ask the Chairman of the School Committee, a few questions re the management. The legal time for school work being five hours, why are children kept in over-time from an hour to an hour and a half some days ? If they arc well kept to their work for live hours, is it wise or right to keep them longer ? Children complain that they arc expected to engage in fresh work, without any instruction from the teachers, thus losing a great deal of time, is this right ? It is fair to parents or guardians who are depending, to a large extent, on their children's help in out-of- school-hours, to keep them in school, beyond the legal time '? I have heard of boys compelled to remain up till ten o'clock and then be up at five in the morning, in consequence of being " kept in," by their " home work " and other duties ? Is it right to keep children in at dinner hour, thus curtailing the necessary time for eating, which must injuriously affect their physical well-being ? If the teachers have too much to do, ought not the Committee see that they are increased to an efficient number ? My apology for writing thus is that the children don't seem to have a moment for themselves to play, etc. Is it not educational slavery ? Again, does not " keeping in " account for so many children being taken away from school earlier than they ought to be ? Looking for a reply. I am, &c, Parent.
