The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, MAY 21, 1895. THE COMING SESSION.

Parlt/mknt will iveet for the trans acton of business on Thursday, the 20ch of June. Several forecasts have been made by alleged well-informed correspondents in Wellington, but these have not been supported by the endorsement of any of the members of the Cabinet who have given public addresses during the recess. There is a fear abroad that in order to make up tor the unmistakeable deficiency in the revenue, increased taxation will be necessary, certainly by an augmentation of the duties on the necessaries of life, as well as on the luxuries, on lines running parallel with the recommendations ot the report of the Tariff Commission, and possibly by an increase in direct taxation. In order to cover or to justify the latter, it is not unlikely that a promise will be held out to owners or occupiers of lands in the country districts of a return to Provincialism with the abolition of a number of the existing Local Bodies, of which there can be no question the. colony has more than enough. It goes without sayinaj that before such a proposal was allowed to become law those principally interested would have a right to be consulted, but whether that courtesy will or will not be extended to them it is impossible to conjecture. We agree with our contemporary, the Manawatu Daily Times, in thinking that any scheme the Government have evolved may possibly be brought down this session, but, owing to the amount of work they are already pledged to attempt to do, will not be proceeded with. However, by the means indicated, it is exceedingly likely heavier burdens of taxation will be placed on the people, for the governing party in

the House are quite strong enough to do so if directed by their leader. We do not dispute the fact that more revenue must be found to carry on the business of the colony, but we hold to the opinion that economy in administration is far better than extravagance of taxation on an already overburdened people.
