THE MONETARY CONFERANCE. HEAVY CLAIMS FOR COMPENSATION. SPURIOUS DIPLOMAS. (Per Press Association.) Melbourne, May 19. The Government has authorised the expenditure of £"91,000 for regrading the railways and improving stations, and the erection of new works in different localities, in order to provide work for a large number of unemployed. A Ministerial visit has been paid to the Village Settlements in the Bendigo district, where many of the settlers were found in a destitute condition, and few attempts were made to properly cultivate and dcvelope the land. The Minister of hinds was greatly dissatisfied, and says the settlement failed to accomplish the purpose intended by Parliament. The Argus, in referring to the persistent insistence of the Agent-Geueral of South Australia for colonial representation on thoj Monetary Conference, says that if Jry any fluke South Australia is allowed to send a silver delegate, Victoria, Qucenland and New Zealand will have to send gold delegates, as those colonies couuot prcmit their exceed iugly large gold interests to be ignored for want of proper advocacy. This Day. Government have received information that spurious diplomas are being circulated, purporting to bo issued by the High School of Engineering affiliated to the Ghent University. Sydney, Tins Day. Some of the claims for compensation on account of the Redfern railway collision range as high as .£30,000.
