It having been reported that the steamer Aotea touched bottom on her recent visit to the Bluff, a diyer went down to-day but was unable to discover any damage done to the hull. The Government Auditor has laid two further informations for embezzlement against the city rate collector. Auckland, May 17. The Pakeno public school was burned down early this morning The origin of the fire is "unknown. There was no insurance. By a fire in Edwin street, Newton, this afternoon, three houses were destroyed and a fourth damaged. They were : — Sealey's house, occupied by Mrs Wright, who was away when the fire broke out, insured for £50 in the Boyal ; Higgins* occupied by Alfred Harvey, bootmaker, insured for £L 9in the Colonial ; Mrs Bell's house, insured for £100 in the South British, and a like amount in the New Zealand. Burchell's house insured for £80 in the Phoenix was partly damaged. Informations were laid to-day for breaches of the Saturday half-holiday against Queen street importers and retailers. Wellington, May 17. A report has been received from the Government timber expert in London which states that enquiries for New Zealand woods are increasing, and the supply is pot equal to the demand. The Department of Industries is preparing a pamphet for distribution in England giving all necessary information regarding New Zealand woods, prices, etc., and the name of sawmills and ports of shipment.
