A Man Confesses to Murdering a Woman.

-o (Per Press Association. 1 ) Auckland, May 13. Last night a man named Samuel Evison, a carpenter, gave himself up to Constable Forbes, of Hamilton, and confessed to having caused the death by drowning of a woman, whom he pushed into the river Trent at Nottingham in March, 1882. The constable get his statement taken before a Justice. Evison appeared perfectly sane. He stated he knew the woman only by the name of Jenny and was acquainted with her only three weeks. Her residence was unknown. She was employed as a clipper and scollaper in the lace trade. He states she was twenty years, dark complexion, with hazel eyes. At the time of the occurrence he was employed by Messrs Bell and Son, contractors and builders, Sherwood street, and boarded with a carpenter in Waterway street, Notting. ham. Herbert Johnson Evison states his sister and mother reside in JRetford, Nottingham. Constable Forbes brings Evison to Auckland to-morrow.
